Hot Yoga

Hot yoga is performed in a well-heated, humid room. The main purpose of the heat and humidity is to loosen up the muscles of the body allowing them to stretch more readily. The humidity and heat also work to rid the body of various toxins which tend to build up within the body due to pollution, chemicals and other environmental causes.

Hatha Yoga

Hot yoga is based upon Hatha yoga which is an ancient form of yoga traditionally practiced in India and other parts of the world. It is a good idea to practice traditional Hatha yoga before you begin hot yoga so that you can concentrate on the necessary postures and poses needed in the new environment.

Precautions

It is not recommended for anyone with certain health conditions such as obesity or heart disease to practice hot yoga. Pregnant women should also avoid hot yoga since the practice can cause your body to become to hot to be safe for the baby's health.

You should also wear comfortable and minimal amounts of clothing to your hot yoga classes. Many people choose to wear a swimsuit since the heat and humidity can be overwhelming when fully dressed. Bringing your own mat is a good idea as well since you can expect to sweat quite a lot during your ninety minute class.

You will also need to drink plenty of water before and after your classes to avoid becoming dehydrated. It is often recommended that you bring some water with you to your hot yoga class as well.

Stages

Hot yoga is practiced in several stages. One of the first things you will learn is how to breathe properly. It is important to learn this breathing technique since you will need plenty of oxygen in the heated environment.

You will eventually be able to tune out all outside stimuli and focus on your hot yoga pose exclusively. This is one of the benefits of yoga: Learning to be content and possessing an inner peace that radiates.

Benefits of Hot Yoga

Yoga is designed to help you focus your energy and promote general health and well being. People who practice hot yoga often report a significant drop in stress levels, less pain associated with chronic diseases and conditions, and an overall sense of relaxation.

While hot yoga is not suited for everyone however those who can and do participate are sure to see excellent results over a period of time. The exercises will help you strengthen and stretch your muscles and provide you with an excellent stress relieving exercise.

Classes

Hot yoga classes can be up to ninety minutes long during which time you will be in a room that has been heated to approximately one-hundred degrees Fahrenheit. The actual length of the class and the temperature may vary slightly but you will definitely break a sweat in your hot yoga class.
